A 28 Mile Paddle For Charity - Garrett & Izzy Paddle for Surfer’s Healing and Surfer’s Environmental Alliance

August 15th, 2009

In late August, Garrett will be in New York for a charity weekend that benefits the 3rd Annual Surfer’s Environmental Alliance.

The event kicks off on the 20th with the Block Party, continues with the celebrity and action sports stars-filled White Water Evening on the 22nd in New Jersey and culminates on the 24th with a 28-mile race around beautiful Manhattan’s East, Hudson and Harlem rivers!

Garrett has loved this event since it began, and many of his closest friends will be participating. The weekend will benefit a charity dear to his heart, Surfers Healing, which teaches surfing to autistic children around the country. The event will also raise funds for numerous coastal awareness groups.

“It feels so warm and good when giving back and sharing the sport I love and live for,” Garrett said.

G-Mac’s Quest for Big Wave Surf Featured on the Homepage of the Re-Launched LATimes.com

August 1st, 2009

G-Mac’s search for the ultimate in big wave surfing was profiled as part of re-launching of the LA Times’ Web site.

The story was one of three videos featured on the new homepage, and it showed footage of Garrett’s successful mission to be part of the first team to ever attempt and surf the tsunami-sized waves made from collapsing glaciers.

In the story, he also discusses what motivates him as a professional surfer and what goes through his head as he rides some of Mother Nature’s biggest waves.

The story was one of the top rated features of 2009, and can be found here.

Mike Takahashi’s, Garrett McNamara and Dawson Jones 13th annual Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race

July 27th, 2009

Aloha!

Yesterday marked Mike Takahashi’s, Garrett McNamara and Dawson Jones 13th annual Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race here in Hawaii. This grueling 32-mile open-ocean race across the storied Molokai Ka’iwi Channel for stand-up paddle (SUP) and prone paddleboarders is considered the world championship of the sport. This year, thanks to the new title sponsor Rainbow Sandals, the stakes were higher than ever with a record prize purse of $16,000.

Australian Jamie Mitchell claimed the win for the eighth consecutive year. That dude is a beast. Hawaii’s Kanesa Duncan claimed her seventh crown in a time of 6:29:29. In the standup paddle (SUP) division, favorite Ekolu Kalama did not disappoint, posting his first solo win in the record time of 5:02:06. The first solo woman SUP-er was Jenny Kalmbach, from the Big Island, in a time of 5:48:31.

This race is no joke and it’s amazing to see what people are capable of doing. The rise in popularity of SUP has definitely boosted competitor attendance. Hawaii is the perfect arena for testing watermen from around the world. Garrett McNamara is one of the founders of this incredible event along with Dawson Jones and Mike Takahashi. Last night we caught up with Garrett, fresh from the race, to get the skinny on the event.

This is what G-Mac had to say:

“This is such an incredible race and I consider everybody who raced a hero and in another league. There was one competitor with a prosthetic arm who really inspired me. Also, a man in a wheel chair came up to me at the finish line and said he just did all the research and would be racing the next year. It’s so inspiring to see people that are deemed challenged accomplish such a feat. I look forward to seeing that guy next year.

This race is such a test of one’s mental and physical limits. Mick Debetta, who held the record for years and now Jamie Mitchell’s trainer, said the first year he did the race that it was the hardest thing he had done in his life and would never do it again. Needless to say, Mick came back for more year after year, and was still there this year competing.

Tom Pohaku Stone is a Hawaiian on a mission. Tom paddled a replica of a board that was used by the ancient Hawaiians. It is a board I would say is impossible to paddle across the channel on. With the assistance of a PWC, Tom crossed the channel successfully. This was amazing and in honor of Hawaiian history and tradition. This race grows every year. Now, with a great new title sponsor, Rainbow Sandals and presented sponsors, Duke’s Waikiki, C4 Waterman, Honolua clothing, and Maui Jems sun glasses it enables us to produce a great race that better accommodates the competitors and everyone involved.

I’d like to give a big thanks to Barrett Tester. He’s been with us from the start. Also, big thanks to Sparky from Rainbow and Gerry Lopez, who surprised us all by competing, finishing and winning 2nd place in their division.”

Garrett and Surfers Healing: A Foundation for Autism Confirm Shooting Dates for Oprah Winfrey Special

July 15th, 2009

“I’ve been so fortunate to surf as a career my whole life, so I feel a sense of responsibility to give back,” Garrett happily says.

His favorite charity is Surfers Healing, which was founded by Israel (Izzy) Paskowitz. Their son Isaiah, who was diagnosed with Autism at age three, is now 16. At 6′4″ tall and 340, “he can be an uncontrollable handful at times for my dear friends Izzy and wife Danielle.”

With all of Izzy’s hard work in and out of the water, he was approached by Oprah Winfrey, who will be doing a documentary on the surf camps and G-Mac’s participation.  The show will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network (formerly Discovery Health), which broadcasts to 70 million viewers.

Her crew is already filming Garrett and Izzy on their 8-day swing up and down the East coast in August and September. Those dates are:

Aug 11th - Folly Beach, South Carolina
Aug 13th - Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina
Aug 15th - Virginia Beach, Virginia
Aug 26th - Topanga Beach, California
Sept 13th & 14th – Belmar, New Jersey
Sept 16th - Long Beach, New York
Sept 18th - Montauk, New York
Sept 19th - Narragansett, Rhode Island

The show is slated to air in January, and “as much fun as I’ll have teaching these kids, I hope you all have even more fun watching,” Garrett said.
